Kelvion Concitherm Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers

The Concitherm range offers particularly high performance in rising-film plate evaporators. Its optimized corrugation design allows wide gaps without any contact points, up to 3m² of plate surface area. At the same time the minimum pressure drop means that there is no need for an intermediate pump. A further advantage of Concitherm over conventional tube heat exchangers is an almost 100% higher temperature transfer. Concitherm plate evaporators can also be used as boosters in combination with conventional plate evaporators.

Concitherm. The Evaporator's Evaporator.

Concitherm is a rising-film plate evaporator, which can be used as a standalone, or as a booster for conventional evaporators. It works well with liquids containing fibers and pulp. Although used most commonly in the sugar refining industry, it functions well in these applications:

Efficient

When comparing the k-values of tube-rising-film and plate-rising-film evaporators, plate evaporators have a k-value which is about twice that of tube-type evaporators (2000 - 4000 kcal/m²h°C), i.e. 1000 m² of plate evaporator surface is equal to 2000 m² of tube-type evaporator surface. When processing products with a higher viscosity, the k-value of plates exceeds that of tubes even further.

Lower Pump Costs

At the same time the minimum pressure drop means that there is no need for an intermediate pump.

Large Capacity

The Concitherm 193 is currently the largest rising-film plate evaporator available on the market worldwide. Due to its special flow gap geometry, it is particularly suited for concentrating products forming deposits and containing solid particles, with large vapor volumes.

Flexible Capacity

Like any gasketed plate heat exchanger, the plate pack can be extended by integrating additional cassettes to boost capacity after the unit is installed.

Compact

Concitherm’s small size means it can be retrofitted into a plant to boost the performance of an existing Roberts evaporator.

Media Flexibility

Fibers? Viscosity? No Problem! Its optimized corrugation design provides wide gaps without any contact points of up to 32 ft² (3m²) plate surface area. And the gaps can accommodate a lot, providing:

  • a 4.5 mm free flow gap on the vapor side and
  • a 7.5 mm free flow gap on the product side.

What does this mean for a sugar refinery?

  • Juice is processed quickly, spending very little time in the unit. How quickly? Typical residence time in a sugar application is less than a minute, compared to the 10-30 minutes seen in a Roberts evaporator.
  • Lower operating temperature difference between the steam and juice sides mean reduced energy costs.
